What KNL means?
When KNL was established, the first company name was Kyynel and it was a tribute to the radio that was one of the Finnish innovations in World War II. The original Kyynelradio used similar technology as we do in our radios. The Finnish word in the radio’s name means ”teardrop”, and KNL is an abbreviation of that word. We wanted to honour our country’s history, engineers and developers by giving this name to our company.
Where it all started?
The company started out of frustration. Our CEO and his fellow founders are former military radio engineers and have been working with radios as a user. They were frustrated of long linking time between radios and started to investigate how could HF be used in radios and how to make the linking time as short as possible. At this point cognitive network came in.
KNL global network uses HF radio, a wide spectrum that is nearly impossible to jam. In fact, parts of the HF spectrum are “jammed” all the time, due to other traffic or solar interference, so we’ve built our radios to be cognitive, meaning they can automatically switch to the next best channel.
KNL was established in 2011 to build a safer, connected world. At the end of 2020 Telenor Maritime acquired KNL and in the beginning of the 2023 Telenor Maritime and KNL decided to dedicate a business unit solely to growing the defence and security connectivity business, serving customers worldwide. KNL is part of Telenor.
Military and defence as backgrounds
Our engineers have backgrounds from the military and defence sector, and they are security checked to ensure the highest level of confidentiality. In addition to security clearance, we hold the standards and approvals for the DefSec industry.
Get connected, no matter where in the world you operate.
Whether you are in the hottest desert or in the coldest arctic, we provide you with a long-range connectivity that keeps you in action and connected. Performance of our radios is excellent even under the Northern Lights and -30 degrees celsius. Our cognitive HF radios are made for Nordic conditions where failure is not an option.
